Stockist Spotlight: Gemma of Other Kids, Leigh-on-Sea
“Other Kids, Other Way”: Raising a Daughter, Running a Store, and Reimagining the High Street
We’re so excited to shine the spotlight on Other Kids, a beautiful, thoughtful children’s store nestled in the seaside town of Leigh-on-Sea. Run by the ever-inspiring Gemma, Other Kids is more than just a shop — it’s a haven for parents looking for stylish, sustainable finds for little ones, all wrapped up in a warm and welcoming space. We caught up with Gemma to hear how it all began, the story behind her unique offering, and how motherhood has shaped her business journey.
Meet Gemma: The Mum Behind Other Kids
We love your store — can you tell us a brief bit about yourself and how your shop came to life?
"I’ve always had a strong interest in fashion and design. I actually studied at Cordwainers College with the intention of becoming a shoe designer… but being young and carefree, I dropped out!
After years of working in fashion retail as a PA, the idea for a children’s shop with a professional shoe fitting service came to me just as my own daughter started walking. There was nowhere locally — or even nearby — that offered both great shoe fitting and stylish designs.
Around that time, my maternity leave ended, and I needed something more flexible around my daughter. The shop was born out of that need, a bit of courage, and a lot of love."
What inspired you to start your business — and what keeps you going on the tougher days?
My daughter was the inspiration. When she took her first steps, I really struggled to find shoes that were properly fitted and looked nice too. That sparked the idea for the shop.
I did a lot of research and eventually found brands that didn’t compromise on comfort or style. Then I trained intensively with the Society of Shoe Fitters so I could offer the service myself.
Starting a business with a one-year-old wasn’t easy — but with the support of my family and friends, I made it work.
The kind words and support from our wonderful customers keep me going on hard days. Our store has grown so much and now includes beautiful clothing, gifts, accessories, and even a women’s collection.
How would you describe the vibe of your store — in three words?
Contemporary, inclusive, cute.
What do you look for when choosing brands to stock? And what drew you to Yonder?
I look for brands that offer classic, comfortable style with a twist — something unique but still practical. Ethical and sustainable values are really important to us, which is why Yonder stood out. We love its ethos and beautiful prints!
How do you hope people feel when they walk into your store or shop with you online?
I hope they feel excited by the products and instantly welcome. It’s really important to me that the shop feels friendly, inviting, and inspiring — whether you’re browsing in person or online.
Do you have a favourite memory or moment since opening the shop?
We’ve been lucky to be featured in magazines and nominated for awards over the years, which has been amazing. But the most memorable moment for me was designing and selling my own label of shoes in the store. That felt really special — and something I’ll always treasure.
You're also a mum like all of us here — what’s the most surprising or unexpected part of juggling motherhood with running your own business?
Before having my daughter, I honestly thought I might stop working altogether and become a stay-at-home mum. But having her actually pushed me to be more ambitious and creative.
I wanted to build something that worked for both of us (and my husband too, of course!). The juggle has been hard — but it’s absolutely been worth every minute.
The store is based in Leigh-on-Sea, which is becoming more popular with day-trippers. What are your favourite local spots — cafés, small businesses, or things to do with kids when people come to visit?
A perfect day in Leigh-on-Sea? Start with coffee from Cult Coffee, then breakfast at Toppers & Toast.
Next, have a wander down Leigh Road — there’s lots of vintage shopping — and don’t miss the indie gems on the Broadway like Scape Interiors and Store 33.
Head down to Old Leigh for a pint and some seafood at the cockle sheds. Then it’s paddling time at Chalkwell Beach.
End the day with dinner at Ugo’s and a bottle of wine at Vino Vero. Bliss!
What’s Playing in the Shop?
Lastly, what’s playing on the shop/studio speakers right now?
Always Jungle! And a bit of Ezra Collective and Andreya Triana too!
